Pope Francis Speaks Out on Environmental, Other Damages Caused by GMOs

For years many people have wondered about the stances of religious organizations on genetically modified organisms, which are lab-created foods by Monsanto and other companies that would not occur in nature.

Recently, Pope Francis of the Catholic Church let the world know where he stands in an Italian interview.

“It is difficult to give an overall judgment on the development of genetically modified organisms (GMO), plant or animal, for medical purposes or in agriculture, since they can be very different and require different considerations,” he said.

Of course it’s interesting to note that the FDA originally said that GMOs, while unique enough to be awarded a patent, are “substantially equivalent” to regular crops, a lie that allowed a swift deregulation of them in America.

The Pope continued, casting doubt on the impacts of the crops and a call to attention as to how they’re being used by large corporations according to this article by the website Sustainable Pulse.

“The spread of these (GM) crops destroys the complex web of ecosystems, decreases diversity in production and affects the present and the future of regional economies,” he said.

“In several countries there is a trend in the development of oligopolies in the production of seeds and other products needed for cultivation, and the dependence deepens when you consider the production of sterile seeds, which end up forcing farmers to buy (seeds) from producers.”

Remember the Monsanto Protection Act? It’s Back, and Worse Than Ever Before

The Monsanto Protection Act became one of the most infamous pieces of legislation in recent U.S. history, prompting a massive backlash in 2014.

But now a new bill disguised as a “GMO labeling” act has been introduced by Rep. Mike Pompeo, causing one major consumer group to label it perhaps even worse than the Monsanto Protection Act.

According to the Center for Food Safety, Rep. Pompeo’s bill has been greatly expanded to actually prohibit all labeling of GMO foods, while making it unlawful for states of local governments to restrict GM crops in any way.

The bill, H.R. 1599, will be discussed at a House hearing on Thursday.

“The Monsanto Protection Act is back, and it’s even worse than before. This bill would strip away a state or local government’s basic rights of local control, and hands the biotech industry everything it wants on a silver platter. No Member of Congress that cares about the rights and concerns of his or her constituents should support this bill,” said Andrew Kimbrell, executive director at Center for Food Safety in this press release from the CFS.

State, Local Laws Undermined

The center also said that the bill would further weaken the federal regulation of GM crops while also forbidding local communities to create laws against them, such as the recent ban in Jackson County, Oregon.

Other similar ordinances have passed in Hawaii, California and Washington State, but would be voided under the bill, which has been dubbed the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act.

The bill would “undemocratically nullify” GM crop regulations that have been on the books in across the country for years.

Oppressive New “Monsanto Law” Meets Opposition in Africa

The nation of Ghana is just one of many on the African continent locked into a struggle with Monsanto, pitting small farmers against the multinational corporation and other similar companies in a struggle for food sovereignty.

Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds and anti-farmer business dealings such as seed consolidation have already led to serious consequences for small farmers in places ranging from India to the Phillippines and many others, and residents of many other countries are beginning to catch on.

The fight for seed and food sovereignty has been especially fierce in Ghana, where seed saving has been a crucial part of traditional farming as it is throughout much of Africa.

Now, the government of Ghana is one where oppressive seed laws are attacking the roots of independent farming in the country, as noted in this recent article by The Ecologist.

The article tells the story of how Ghana’s women farmers are especially steadfast in resisting the proposed laws.

“My mother gave me some seeds to plant. And I’m also giving those seeds to my children to plant.

“So that is ongoing, every time we transfer to our children,” Esther Boakye Yiadom explained in the article. “And that is how all the women are doing it. We don’t buy, we produce it ourselves.”

The barter and seed and food exchange system practiced by her and others in Ghana is the exact model of small-scale farming the United Nations says we need to feed the world, but will it be able to continue if Monsanto and others gain control?

A new law in Ghana dubbed the ‘Monsanto Law’ would effectively supercharge the power of multinational seed companies while at the same time restricting the rights of small farmers to keep and exchange seeds.

Today just 10 corporations control over 75% of the the world’s commercial seed market and yet in Africa 80% of seeds are controlled by farmer-managed systems. What could be the consequences of such a takeover of seeds in Africa by Monsanto and others for small farmers?

Large Cross-Section of Studies the World Over Link Monsanto’s Roundup to Cancer Epidemic

The Monsanto Company has continually maintained that one of the cornerstones of its vast agrochemical empire, its best-selling Roundup herbicide, is safe for human exposure.

And yet time and time again, independent research has disproved this notion with studies linking it to cancer and several other serious health problems.

Monsanto originally thought that because animals lack a specific enzyme, ESPS synthase, that they would be immune from the harmful effects of Roundup. But independent science is increasingly showing that it does in fact cause serious harm to humans and animals after all.

As Dr. Jeff Ritterman writes in this article from

“The herbicide has been proven to cause birth defects in vertebrates, including in humans, and it may also be the cause of a fatal kidney disease epidemic.

“An increasing number of studies are now linking the herbicide to cancer…”

Sprayings of Roundup in South America have had drastically bad effects on the health of locals.

Cancer Exploding in the “Soy Republic”

Thanks in large part to exposure to Roundup and glyphosate, the main ingredient in the herbicide, doctors have noticed an alarming increase in cancers in the “Soy Republic” in Latin American, where 125 million acres of soy has been planted, most of it GMO and heavily sprayed.

“Cancer cases are multiplying as never before in areas with massive use of pesticides.” said Dr. Medardo Avila Vazquez, a pediatrician specializing in environmental health, at a recent conference.

A 2010 study undertaken in 2010 by another doctor found skyrocketing cancer rates in the last 15 years, based on data from 65,000 people in Sante Fe, located in Argentina’s soy region.

Lung, prostate and breast cancers were discovered at rates 2-4 times higher than the national average in the area.

For more from Dr. Ritterman and more on the study, as well as several other stories ranging from South America to the United States and Europe linking Roundup exposure to brain cancer, lymphoma, and several other serious maladies, check out the original TruthOut article here.

Press Release: Third Annual March Against Monsanto Gains Massive International Support

NEW YORK, May 20, 2015 — The worldwide March Against Monsanto campaign has received massive international support following the announcement of its official launch date of May 23rd, in which hundreds of thousands will take to the streets in peaceful protest against the Monsanto Company.

With the latest attendance records expected to shatter previous numbers, thousands of grassroots supporters have already launched local events in cities that range from Bordeaux, France to Göteborg, Sweden. In each city, March Against Monsanto will feature different prominent speakers, including former presidential candidates and health icons.

Spanning 6 continents, 48 countries, and 421 cities, March Against Monsanto 2015 has generated mass awareness and interest as world regulatory organizations openly declare Monsanto’s glyphosate-containing Roundup herbicide to be a serious threat to health. The leading authority on human wellness protocols, The World Health Organization, has already determined Monsanto’s Roundup to be a ‘probable carcinogen’ within the food supply.

The announcements have led to initiatives like The Women’s and Children’s Bill of Rights to Ban Glyphosate, which would protect highly susceptible groups from toxic glyphosate exposure if signed into law in October. Glyphosate has been detected in groundwater supplies as well as 60-100% of rainwater collection samples in various parts of the world, inciting concerns of mass pollution on a global scale.

March Against Monsanto 2015 Official Press Release

Media alert: The 2015 March Against Monsanto is set to launch worldwide on May 23.

For immediate release:

WORLDWIDE – On May 23, 2015, hundreds of thousands of concerned individuals will gather across 38 countries and 428 cities to join in peaceful protest against the Monsanto Company as a part of the March Against Monsanto grassroots campaign. This movement seeks to raise awareness to the dangers surrounding Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds and cancer-linked herbicide Roundup.

The campaign comes as the demand for GMO labeling and non-GMO food alternatives continues its exponential climb, with states like Vermont enacting mandatory GM labeling legislation that will require food corporations to let consumers know if their products contain GM ingredients.

In polls conducted by the New York Times, Washington Post, Consumer Reports, and many others, over 90% of respondents were in support of national GMO labeling – an initiative that has been defeated time and time again at the state level thanks to heavy spending by Monsanto-backed lobbying groups.

Highlighting the concern over Monsanto’s creations is the latest report from the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research group, which listed Monsanto’s best-selling herbicide Roundup as a ‘probable carcinogen’. This finding has drawn many researchers and health experts to stand behind the goals of March Against Monsanto.

“There’s no question that March Against Monsanto is the most powerful grassroots initiative we have in the fight to reclaim our food supply from the GMO seed juggernaut known as the Monsanto Company,” said Anthony Gucciardi, March Against Monsanto speaker and founder of the natural health website

“With the new admission by the World Health Organization that Monsanto’s best-selling herbicide Roundup is causing cancer worldwide, now is the most important time to join the movement and take a stand.”

Despite claims by the multinational biotech giant that genetically modified crops would actually lead to a decrease in Roundup use, U.S. Geological Survey data reveals the use of Roundup’s key component glyphosate has increased 16-fold since the mid-1990s when GMO crops were first introduced.

March Against Monsanto protests will begin May 23rd with extensive physical protests and related online coverage throughout the day on news media platforms as well as

This year’s May 23 March Against Monsanto is expected to once again draw millions of protesters to the streets as part of a global event to raise awareness and to speak with the general public about what the St. Louis based agrochemical and GMO giant is doing to our planet.

And we’ve got plenty to talk about. Last month the World Health Organization (WHO) declared glyphosate, the key ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, a probable human carcinogen.

That didn’t stop Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) from reintroducing the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act, an industry written bill (H.R.1599) designed to stomp out states’ right to pass mandatory GMO labeling laws.

Not to mention Hillary Clinton, an official supporter of Monsanto and GMO crops, has thrown her hat into the ring for President.

Monsanto Makes Us Sick. Literally. We want you to help OCA take this message to the streets on Saturday, May 23.

Lawsuit Accuses Monsanto of Lying About Safety of Roundup

Carey Wedler
April 23, 2015

(ANTIMEDIA) Los Angeles, CA — A class action suit against the Monsanto corporation was filed in Los Angeles this week in the Superior Court of California, Los Angeles County. It accuses the company of false advertising for its implied claims that the herbicide, Roundup, is safe for humans. As the lawsuit details:

Defendant makes the claim that Roundup, the world’s most popular weedkiller, works by targeting an enzyme supposedly found only in plants, but not in people. And this is blatantly false.

The enzyme (EPSP synthase), the lawsuit claims, can be found in human gut bacteria. Though scientific studies say glyphosate is safe for humans because they do not have the enzyme, the plaintiffs allege that this is incorrect.

Glyphosate [the main ingredient in Roundup] works by inhibiting weeds from producing EPSP synthase—and once rendered unable to produce this enzyme—weeds cannot uptake minerals, nor can they make proteins from amino acids, and weeds then starve to death.

The lawsuit suggests that when people eat foods that have been sprayed with Roundup, this same, deathly mechanism goes to work on the EPSP synthase that plaintiffs say is found in the human gut:

The same chemistry that kills backyard weeds likewise kills gut bacteria, and this bacteria kill-off compromises our digestion, metabolism, and vital immune system functions.

The suit contends:

When we eat crops sprayed with glyphosate, we ingest glyphosate, and detectable quantities accumulate in our tissues…Glyphosate has been detected in urine, blood, even breast milk—and 75% of rainwater samples.

The lawsuit also alleges many adverse health effects of consuming glyphosate:

Because it kills off our gut bacteria, glyphosate is linked to stomach and bowel problems, indigestion, ulcers, colitis, gluten intolerance, insomnia, lethargy, depression, Crohn’s Disease, Celiac Disease, allergies, obesity, diabetes, infertility, liver disease, renal failure, autism, Alzheimer’s, endocrine disruption, and the W.H.O. recently announced it is ‘probably carcinogenic.’

The complaint further claims that dogs and cats carry the EPSP synthase enzyme, which puts them at risk for health issues related to ingestion of Roundup-coated products.

If the allegations of the suit are proven true, Monsanto has deceived consumers into believing Roundup cannot harm humans, thereby helping to create an epidemic of health issues. The United States government has also been complicit, passing laws to protect the corrupt mega-corporation and colluding with the Monsanto lobby. In 2013, the EPA raised the minimum amount of glyphosate that could be used on food crops.

Though Monsanto’s power is continually bolstered by the government, the company is losing ground and popularity. Growing numbers of countries are banning Monsanto products while a steady slew of bad press has made a significant dent in the company’s profits.

The lawsuit seeks to include anyone as a plaintiff who purchased Roundup or Roundup-related products during the last four years. It seeks unspecified damages and anticipates “thousands and thousands of class members.”
