Victory!! Monsanto’s DARK Act (Barely) Blocked By Senate

The efforts of millions of concerned citizens, numerous phone and email campaigns, dozens of online petitions, and trips to D.C. to lobby for our right to know were not in vain.

Leading the charge today, Senator Jeff Merkely demolished the pro-industry talking points that many of our senators lean on in order to further their agenda. The Senate blocked Senator Pat Robert’s cloture, 48-49, that would have allowed for the advancement of a bill to deny Americans the right to know what is in the food that lines our store shelves.

“Do not crush state’s rights, do not steal consumer’s right to know, and try to do it in the dark of night while the nation is distracted by major primaries. It is wrong on policy, it’s wrong on process, and it’s an injustice to every citizen in our nation,” proclaimed Senator Merkley.

While today is a huge victory for the safe food movement and consumers everywhere, a dark cloud does hang over the vote as nearly half of our senators voted in favor of the bill rather than against it. The required 60 votes needs to move the cloture forward did not happen, so despite a corrupt attempt by nearly half of the Senate body, the bill was blocked.

Nearly 100% of Americans are in favor of a mandatory, on-package labeling standard, yet our elected officials are far more concerned with campaign finance money they are receiving from biotech and big food corporations. According to the FEC website, this week alone hundreds of thousands of dollars have been pumped into senate re-election campaigns. GMO labeling is a right afforded to citizens in over 60 countries, including Russia and China. In fact, numerous countries are making moves to ban GMOs, while our government officials are making every nefarious stride to ban GMO labeling.

I must commend Sen. Jeff Merkley’s courageous speech on the Senate floor today. He is a beacon of hope in a cesspool of biotech-loving scum. Senator Merkley called out the sham proposals offered by his associates which include a 1-800 number, QR codes, and social media investigating in order to obtain information on the food that lines our shelves. Calling it a “house of mirrors”, Merkley implored his fellow senators to honor the ‘one second test’ demanded by 9 out of 10 Americans. This ‘test’ would simply require a symbol or a few words to be mandated on food packaging so the average consumer can quickly determine if an item contains GM ingredients.

Senator Merkley went on to question his fellow senators, “Why is this bill before us? I ask you, why a bill that say the interests of a few titans in crushing a state laboratory are more important than the views of 90% of Americans?”

We must flex our muscle and show our politicians, as well as unethical corporations, that we the people have the power. Remember how your senator voted in November. It is time to clean house and get rid of career politicians who cashed in their morals long ago. Continue to vote with your wallets. Clearly, this is where our strength lies. They can take away our rights, but they cannot force us to buy toxic, chemical-laden products. Vote wisely with your dollars. Do not support companies who pump millions into denying our right to know.

Pledge to join March Against Monsanto’s global action on May 21, 2016. Hundreds of cities all across the globe will march in solidarity in an effort to raise community awareness about Monsanto, their atrocious crimes against humanity, and the complicity of our elected officials. Find your local event here. For questions or to register a city not on our list, please email addmymarch@gmail.com.

This fight is far from over.

How Africa Can Solve Malnutrition Without Any “Help” From Monsanto

For countless decades the powers of the world have looked at Africa with hungry eyes, seeking to tap into and exploit the continent’s vast resources.

In years past it was the conversion of staple food craps to cash crops (such as cocoa) but in the 21st century things have become a bit more coded.

The Monsanto Company and its GM seeds with restrictive contracts, as well as chemicals, have become a new form of imperialism disguised as providing help to indigenous populations around the world.

Lately, the powers-that-be have been focused on Africa as their new target, with hopes of introducing more and more GM seeds (through “charity” outfits like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) and eventually foisting them on unwilling and unsuspecting farmers and peasants.

The constant refrain is that Africa needs GMOs to feed their starving population, but this new paradigm has been met with stiff opposition in countries across the continent.

The prevailing thought among those in the know is that Africa has more than enough resources and manpower to feed its population in time, provided that the right resources go to the right people, of course.

Africa’s farming could benefit greatly from increased leafy green production to combat malnutrition.

Feeding Africa Without Monsanto’s Help

According to recent research, there are plenty of untapped superfoods growing across Africa that can help combat malnutrition in ways GMOs could never dream of touching.

For example the superfood moringa, from the moringa tree, has “more vitamin A than carrots, seven times more vitamin C than oranges, and twice the protein of cow’s milk, per 100 grams” according to Kenyan horticulturalistMary Abukutsa-Onyango.

Moringa is just one example of a bursting ecosystem of highly nutritious greens that are capable of growing well in Africa.

According to Abukutsa-Onyango, Kenyan farmers planted 25% more of these types of foods to meet demand from 2011-2013, and awareness is increasing among Africans who seek these types of highly nutritious native “superfoods.”

Can the American Farming System Handle the Skyrocketing Demand for Non-GMO Foods?

As evidenced by May’s March Against Monsanto and the protest movement against GMOs at the grocery store and farmer’s markets, demand for non-GMO and organic food is skyrocketing.

But as more and more companies and products go non-GMO, will the American farming system be able to handle all of these requests?

Or will companies resort to bending the rules and passing off the same “conventional” ingredients as something they’re not?

Recent reports have suggested that America has been forced to import everything from Romanian corn to grass-fed Australian beef in order to keep up with demand.

While challenges do exist, consumers should be delighted to know that the supply is finally catching up to the demand.

Suppliers have been stocking up on Non-GMO grains to meet demand.

Suppliers have been stocking up on Non-GMO grains to meet demand.

American Non-GMO Supply Catching Up

According to this article from the Iowa-based Organic & Non-GMO Report website and newsletter, the non-GMO grain supply is now up 25 percent, while demand is up 15-20 percent.

“I don’t think there is a danger of non-GMO supplies running out,” says Lynn Clarkson in the article, the president of Clarkson Grain.

Further into the article it is revealed that there has been an astounding 80 percent growth in the demand for non-GMO and organic food recently, according to Kara VanKleek, marketing director at CHS, Inc. which supplies Non-GMO Project Verified soy flours, flakes and oils.

Soy flour in particular has been in high demand because of its status as a well known GMO-tainted food product.

While much progress has been made there is still work to do, especially in terms of helping cities and towns that still have virtually no non-GMO options available, including restaurants and sellers of packaged foods.

For more information on the continuing rise of non-GMO foodstuffs in the United States and the incredible demand being generated, check out the full article here from the Non-GMO & Organic Report.

Message of Solidarity from Maui, Ground Zero for Monsanto’s GMO Experiments

The island of Maui and its incredibly beautiful and biodiverse landscape has been under grave threat threat from Monsanto chemicals and GMO experiments in recent years.

Despite that, the people have persevered, gaining a GMO ban in Maui County that has unfortunately led to a legal battle instead of granting the results the people actually voted on.

Recently Elise Travis & Judith Carroll, “Citizens of Maui, Hawaii & People for Justice” submitted the following message of solidarity with MAM:

Aloha from Maui,

On May 23rd, 2015 Maui, Hawaii stands in solidarity with all of the global Protectors through out the World. Maui is Ground Zero for Monsanto’s toxic chemical testing of GMO seeds.

At this time we would like to send our prayers along with our message of Aloha to everyone participating in The March Against Monsanto. May our message of Aloha ‘aina and malama ‘aina touch the hearts and minds of the perpetrators who are poisoning our planet.

May this evolution restore and save our aina (land) as well as protecting & securing the safety of the World’s food supply.

The following is a message (prayer) from Lei’ohu Ryder (Lei’ohu Ryder is a spiritual leader, visionary, healer, singer/songwriter, and educator on Maui; editor’s note, MAM is a non-religious movement open to everyone):

Aloha ʻāina, mālama ʻāina! Remain rooted to aloha! We take a breath, we take the next step & hoʻolōkāhi i ka puʻuwai, unify in one heart! As we breathe in to our essence, a refreshing breath of change comes wafting upon our Maui miracle to usher in a new dawn of understanding, educating and awareness.

Lawsuit Accuses Monsanto of Lying About Safety of Roundup

Carey Wedler
April 23, 2015

(ANTIMEDIA) Los Angeles, CA — A class action suit against the Monsanto corporation was filed in Los Angeles this week in the Superior Court of California, Los Angeles County. It accuses the company of false advertising for its implied claims that the herbicide, Roundup, is safe for humans. As the lawsuit details:

Defendant makes the claim that Roundup, the world’s most popular weedkiller, works by targeting an enzyme supposedly found only in plants, but not in people. And this is blatantly false.

The enzyme (EPSP synthase), the lawsuit claims, can be found in human gut bacteria. Though scientific studies say glyphosate is safe for humans because they do not have the enzyme, the plaintiffs allege that this is incorrect.

Glyphosate [the main ingredient in Roundup] works by inhibiting weeds from producing EPSP synthase—and once rendered unable to produce this enzyme—weeds cannot uptake minerals, nor can they make proteins from amino acids, and weeds then starve to death.

The lawsuit suggests that when people eat foods that have been sprayed with Roundup, this same, deathly mechanism goes to work on the EPSP synthase that plaintiffs say is found in the human gut:

The same chemistry that kills backyard weeds likewise kills gut bacteria, and this bacteria kill-off compromises our digestion, metabolism, and vital immune system functions.

The suit contends:

When we eat crops sprayed with glyphosate, we ingest glyphosate, and detectable quantities accumulate in our tissues…Glyphosate has been detected in urine, blood, even breast milk—and 75% of rainwater samples.

The lawsuit also alleges many adverse health effects of consuming glyphosate:

Because it kills off our gut bacteria, glyphosate is linked to stomach and bowel problems, indigestion, ulcers, colitis, gluten intolerance, insomnia, lethargy, depression, Crohn’s Disease, Celiac Disease, allergies, obesity, diabetes, infertility, liver disease, renal failure, autism, Alzheimer’s, endocrine disruption, and the W.H.O. recently announced it is ‘probably carcinogenic.’

The complaint further claims that dogs and cats carry the EPSP synthase enzyme, which puts them at risk for health issues related to ingestion of Roundup-coated products.

If the allegations of the suit are proven true, Monsanto has deceived consumers into believing Roundup cannot harm humans, thereby helping to create an epidemic of health issues. The United States government has also been complicit, passing laws to protect the corrupt mega-corporation and colluding with the Monsanto lobby. In 2013, the EPA raised the minimum amount of glyphosate that could be used on food crops.

Though Monsanto’s power is continually bolstered by the government, the company is losing ground and popularity. Growing numbers of countries are banning Monsanto products while a steady slew of bad press has made a significant dent in the company’s profits.

The lawsuit seeks to include anyone as a plaintiff who purchased Roundup or Roundup-related products during the last four years. It seeks unspecified damages and anticipates “thousands and thousands of class members.”

‘Altered Genes, Twisted Truth:’ Jane Goodall Promotes Attorney’s New Book on the Fallacies of GMO “Safety”

Supporters of companies producing genetically modified foods like Monsanto, DuPont and the others claim that their products have been rigorously tested and that their safety has been proven.

But millions of activists across the globe remain skeptical of these claims, in large part because of government collusion with the aforementioned chemical and GMO companies.

Accusations of systematic scientific fraud and bias in favor of approving GMOs and maintaining the status quo have yet to be answered, and now a new book is once again pointing the finger at these companies over the safety of their products.

The book titled ‘Altered Genes, Twisted Truth,’ was recently launched at a press conference in London by author Steven M. Druker, and includes a foreword from renowned researcher Dr. Jane Goodall.

The book is available on Amazon and is currently ranked #1 in three separate categories on the shopping website.

In the book, Druker, an American public interest attorney who gained notoriety for initiating a lawsuit against the FDA forcing it reveal files on genetically modified foods, reveals his shocking findings and demonstrates the dangerous pattern of corruption and selective ignorance exhibited by the organization.

Those files showed that GMOs were only allowed to make it to market in 1992 because the FDA ignored the warnings of its own scientists, violated a federal food safety law allowing them to be marketed without having been proven safe through standard testing, and lied about the facts surrounding them according to this article from the website Farm Wars.

Contrary to the pronouncements of its proponents, the massive enterprise to reconfigure the genetic core of the world’s food supply is not based on sound science but on the systematic subversion of science – and it would collapse if subjected to an open airing of the facts,” Druker said.

Goodall had this to say about Druker’s book: “I shall urge everyone I know who cares about life on Earth, and the future of their children, and children’s children, to read it,” she said.

It will go a long way toward dispelling the confusion and delusion that has been created regarding the genetic engineering process and the foods it produces. . . . Steven Druker is a hero. He deserves at least a Nobel Prize.”

Druker issued a challenge to the Royal Society in Britain to confront and addressing the facts. culled from 15 years of research in the book, as well.

National GMO Labeling Bill Reintroduced as U.S. Reps, Citizens Demand the Right to Know

A new bipartisan bill that would give Americans more information about what’s in their food was reintroduced on Thursday, Feb. 12 in both the U.S. Senate and House, as announced on the Center for Food Safety’s website.

The bill, introduced by Sens. Barbara Boxer of California, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Rep. Peter DeFazio of Oregon, would require that food manufacturers label foods that contain genetically modified ingredients.

“We cannot continue to keep Americans in the dark about the food they eat,” said Rep. Peter DeFazio.

“More than sixty other countries make it easy for consumers to choose. Why should the U.S. be any different? If food manufacturers stand by their product and the technology they use to make it, they should have no problem disclosing that information to consumers.”

Chef Tom Colicchio also joined them to add his voice to the discussion.

“The public wants more information about the food they are buying and how it’s grown,” said Colicchio, owner of Craft Restaurants and co-founder of Food Policy Action. “I applaud Senators Boxer and Blumenthal and Representative DeFazio for their leadership and urge their colleagues to join them in standing up for the 93 percent of Americans who want to know whether their food has been genetically modified.”

In total, over 1.4 million signatures have been collected on behalf of people demanding their right to know whether their food contains GMOs, a right which is afforded to residents in over 60 countries.

“The industry promise that planting GMO crops would reduce the need for harmful weed killers has been broken,”  said Mary Ellen Kustin, EWG senior policy analyst.

“We’ve run the first 20 years of the GMO experiment and now know that in fact GMOs require more herbicides over time. With even more toxic compounds like 2,4-D and dicamba being approved for use on GMO crops, consumers should be able to make informed decisions about what food they’re buying.”

gmo labeling bill introduced

As noted by the Center, Labeling opponents are pushing a bill that would pre-empt GMO labeling laws already in effect in Vermont, Maine and Connecticut, as well as pending legislation in more than 20 other states.

The legislation pushed by the opposition is known much-maligned (and misleading) “Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act,” which has been dubbed by activists as the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act.

The DARK Act was actually introduced by a powerful pro-GMO food lobby (learn more about it here along with how you can help stop it).
