Victory!! Monsanto’s DARK Act (Barely) Blocked By Senate

The efforts of millions of concerned citizens, numerous phone and email campaigns, dozens of online petitions, and trips to D.C. to lobby for our right to know were not in vain.

Leading the charge today, Senator Jeff Merkely demolished the pro-industry talking points that many of our senators lean on in order to further their agenda. The Senate blocked Senator Pat Robert’s cloture, 48-49, that would have allowed for the advancement of a bill to deny Americans the right to know what is in the food that lines our store shelves.

“Do not crush state’s rights, do not steal consumer’s right to know, and try to do it in the dark of night while the nation is distracted by major primaries. It is wrong on policy, it’s wrong on process, and it’s an injustice to every citizen in our nation,” proclaimed Senator Merkley.

While today is a huge victory for the safe food movement and consumers everywhere, a dark cloud does hang over the vote as nearly half of our senators voted in favor of the bill rather than against it. The required 60 votes needs to move the cloture forward did not happen, so despite a corrupt attempt by nearly half of the Senate body, the bill was blocked.

Nearly 100% of Americans are in favor of a mandatory, on-package labeling standard, yet our elected officials are far more concerned with campaign finance money they are receiving from biotech and big food corporations. According to the FEC website, this week alone hundreds of thousands of dollars have been pumped into senate re-election campaigns. GMO labeling is a right afforded to citizens in over 60 countries, including Russia and China. In fact, numerous countries are making moves to ban GMOs, while our government officials are making every nefarious stride to ban GMO labeling.

I must commend Sen. Jeff Merkley’s courageous speech on the Senate floor today. He is a beacon of hope in a cesspool of biotech-loving scum. Senator Merkley called out the sham proposals offered by his associates which include a 1-800 number, QR codes, and social media investigating in order to obtain information on the food that lines our shelves. Calling it a “house of mirrors”, Merkley implored his fellow senators to honor the ‘one second test’ demanded by 9 out of 10 Americans. This ‘test’ would simply require a symbol or a few words to be mandated on food packaging so the average consumer can quickly determine if an item contains GM ingredients.

Senator Merkley went on to question his fellow senators, “Why is this bill before us? I ask you, why a bill that say the interests of a few titans in crushing a state laboratory are more important than the views of 90% of Americans?”

We must flex our muscle and show our politicians, as well as unethical corporations, that we the people have the power. Remember how your senator voted in November. It is time to clean house and get rid of career politicians who cashed in their morals long ago. Continue to vote with your wallets. Clearly, this is where our strength lies. They can take away our rights, but they cannot force us to buy toxic, chemical-laden products. Vote wisely with your dollars. Do not support companies who pump millions into denying our right to know.

Pledge to join March Against Monsanto’s global action on May 21, 2016. Hundreds of cities all across the globe will march in solidarity in an effort to raise community awareness about Monsanto, their atrocious crimes against humanity, and the complicity of our elected officials. Find your local event here. For questions or to register a city not on our list, please email addmymarch@gmail.com.

This fight is far from over.

Can the American Farming System Handle the Skyrocketing Demand for Non-GMO Foods?

As evidenced by May’s March Against Monsanto and the protest movement against GMOs at the grocery store and farmer’s markets, demand for non-GMO and organic food is skyrocketing.

But as more and more companies and products go non-GMO, will the American farming system be able to handle all of these requests?

Or will companies resort to bending the rules and passing off the same “conventional” ingredients as something they’re not?

Recent reports have suggested that America has been forced to import everything from Romanian corn to grass-fed Australian beef in order to keep up with demand.

While challenges do exist, consumers should be delighted to know that the supply is finally catching up to the demand.

Suppliers have been stocking up on Non-GMO grains to meet demand.

American Non-GMO Supply Catching Up

According to this article from the Iowa-based Organic & Non-GMO Report website and newsletter, the non-GMO grain supply is now up 25 percent, while demand is up 15-20 percent.

“I don’t think there is a danger of non-GMO supplies running out,” says Lynn Clarkson in the article, the president of Clarkson Grain.

Further into the article it is revealed that there has been an astounding 80 percent growth in the demand for non-GMO and organic food recently, according to Kara VanKleek, marketing director at CHS, Inc. which supplies Non-GMO Project Verified soy flours, flakes and oils.

Soy flour in particular has been in high demand because of its status as a well known GMO-tainted food product.

While much progress has been made there is still work to do, especially in terms of helping cities and towns that still have virtually no non-GMO options available, including restaurants and sellers of packaged foods.

5 Companies Against Genetically Modified Foods

As consumers become more health conscious and knowledgeable about what they are eating and where it comes from, more are demanding to know if the food they eat contains GMOs. That's resulting in both national and state-specific movements.

Roughly 37 states are proposing that food labels contain whether the product contains GMOs, according to Right to Know GMO - A Coalition of States, which of course are meeting resistance from companies like Monsanto (MON_), DuPont (DD_) and others that create GMO seeds for large commercial crop growing. Many countries already have similar labeling.

We've already seen smaller natural foods and specialized companies move to taking out foods sourced from GMOs from their products - Popcorn Indiana's Fit Popcorn, Trader Joes' health and beauty products and Clif Bars, for instance, but it's notable when a large company moves to making food without GMOs, given that sourcing actual food products not made from GMOs is easier said than done. (The working percentage of corn seeds that are from GMOs, for example, is about 90%.)

Food Safety Expert: GMO products cause cancer and obesity’

Russia is firm: no genetically modified organisms in food production, the head of Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture Nikolay Fyodorov stated at the All-Russian Meeting of Agrarians. GMO-foods controversies between scientists, ecologists and producers have a long history. Russia, which is now going organic, has faced these problems just recently.

The battle is being waged by two camps: while scientists lack arguments and evidence that GMO is harmful, huge and powerful production corporation have resources and political links. Scientists say they will need another couple of decades for a comprehensive research, but some threats are obvious already now, says Biology Professor and international expert on eco and food safety Dr. Irina Ermakova:

"These organisms are all dangerous because the very technology of their production is far from being perfect – it features pathogenic bacteria and viruses. When scientists tested the aftermath of GMO-produce on animals, they were horrified with the results – cancer and obesity. So the best things would be to ban such foods at all, as European countries do".
